THE HOMES
Mt Taylor is a series of three homes carefully sited along Mount Taylor Drive in Glendowie, at the threshold of St Heliers. Designed by Bare Architecture, the development responds to both the natural level changes of the site and the wider context of the Eastern Bays.
These are not generic units, but individual homes tied together through a shared architectural language, a consistent material palette, and a strong relationship with their landscaped setting.

Spatial Qualities
The architecture prioritises sunlight, outlook, and connection. Large eastern decks capture the morning light, while northern and western balconies extend the living spaces outward, inviting sun into the heart of each home throughout the day. These external platforms are not only environmental responses but also social ones, spaces where casual interaction with neighbours can occur, or equally, where privacy can be found depending on one’s mood.

Every bedroom is given a Juliet balcony, allowing each room to be opened to the air, creating moments of connection to the external environment.

Though the buildings sit low within the landscape, they house generous programmes: large kitchens and dining areas, two lounges, four bedrooms, and 2.5 bathrooms. Double garages and vertical lifts ensure ease of movement and long-term liveability.
The Site and Setting
Each home is grounded on a concrete block podium, a deliberate architectural move that anchors the buildings to the site while creating a robust base for the living spaces above. From this podium, the homes step with the natural fall of the land, avoiding dominance and instead embedding themselves within the landscape.

The landscape design, by a registered landscape architect, acts as a soft extension of the floor plan. Planting conceals much of the ground level, making the forms above appear lighter and less imposing, while weaving outdoor rooms into the overall flow of the development.
Materials
Materiality is restrained, robust, and cohesive across the three dwellings:

  • Concrete podiums form a strong base.
  • Cedar shiplap cladding, stained in natural tones, introduces warmth and tactility.
  • Metal cladding and roofing in Colorsteel Gull Grey provide durability and sharp definition.
  • Thermally broken aluminium joinery ensures high performance and continuity of tone.
  • Interiors feature European oak flooring, natural wool carpets, and bespoke oak veneer joinery, balanced by natural stone benchtops.
